In North America, the 50’s saw a folk music revival that brought artists like Woody Guthrie to the forefront of popular music, along with his mandate to express the social injustices of the times. Continuing through the decades, over and over, music and the arts have been a way for communities to create a social or environmental message, communicate to the masses, and effectively create movement.

This is evidenced in the massive undertakings from organizations like Live 8 concerts, the musical endeavors of War Child, and even the local efforts of The Edmonton Folk Festival and their impressive volunteer-operated social programs.

The innate ability of music to create health and wellness in a community, as well as the natural marriage of progressive change and its expression through artistry have been the deciding factors in the continuing of our work.

Through the Music Is A Weapon mission and vision we have created the circumstances in which music and art can grow and develop relationships within different communities, environmental movements and social programs in Edmonton. The innate tendency of music and artistry to become deeply integrated within a community – socially and economically – is one that we continuously work to enable. The two elements are magnetic to each other. We are simply architects creating an environment for these relationships to flourish.
